UFC 251 LIVE on Saturday between Usman vs. Masvidal Live: The UFC’s “Fight Island” venue comes into operation on Saturday as UFC 251 takes place in Abu Dhabi, with three title fights and a set of health and safety measures in place due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. The card is the first of four to be held at a purpose-built facility which is part of a “safe zone” on Yas Island, east of the city of Abu Dhabi and close to the airport.
The zone contains the fight venue and training facilities as well as several hotels and restaurants, and access is strictly controlled.
UFC 251 may be the sixth fight card in promotional history to boast three championship bouts, but few have matched the level of anticipation and excitement. Sure, Georges St-Pierre vs. Michael Bisping at UFC 217 had hype as GSP returned from an extended layoff, and of course Conor McGregor challenging Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title at UFC 205 was must-see TV, but this weekend feels different when Kamaru Usman looks to defend his welterweight title against Jorge Masvidal at "Fight Island" in Abu Dhabi.
The two have had beef over the last seven months as they negotiated back and forth to get a deal done. But Masvidal and UFC couldn't come to terms. Instead, the promotion chose Gilbert Burns -- a teammate and training partner of Usman -- to face the champ for the title. However, Burns tested positive for the coronavirus just six days before the scheduled fight, forcing UFC to find a solution. In steps Masvidal and one of the biggest cards of the year got even bigger.
Some of the reasons that this card is one of the biggest ever are those other title fights before Usman vs. Masvidal. Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway are set to rematch for the featherweight title after Volkanovski ended the Hawaiian's run as champ in December 2019 by split decision. Holloway has been champing at the bit for his chance at a rematch against the native of New Zealand.
Plus, Petr Yan is set to take on former featherweight king Jose Aldo in a battle for the vacant bantamweight crown. Henry Cejudo dropped the title shortly after announcing his retirement from the sport in May. Yan has been on a roll while Aldo has lost two straight fights.
Fighters have been instructed to gather at one of a number of departure points to be tested and quarantined before travelling to the United Arab Emirates, with further tests on-site both before and after the event. The preliminary card starts at 3.30 AM IST (July 12); 10 PM GMT, 6 PM ET, 3 PM PT (July 11). The main card, on the other hand, starts at 7.30 AM IST, 2 AM GMT (July 12); 10 PM ET, 7 PM PT (July 11).
